Finally got to start watching Park Chanwook's first part of The Vengence Trilogy. Many are familiar with Oldboy which was the second film in the trilogy.
Like many people I know the first time you have seen a Park Chanwook film would have been Oldboy (2003). This is the entry film since it was very popular in what you could term "underground cinema" here in the states. I was surprised many years later I finally searched into the director more and discovered that it was all part of his trilogy. So now with Netflix and some free time I am watching the trilogy. So first up is Sympathy for Mr. Vengence (2002).
It's a bit slow but the character development is strong and the story is a bit nutty. Here is the basic plot line to the movie. Ryu trying to earn enough money for his sister's kidney transplant and the path of vengeance that follows. That's all you got to know going into this one.
A scene that I felt was lifted from a particular Tarantino movie from 1994. But that could be argued since many feel he does the samething in his films.
If you have seen Oldboy or not give this one a view. The end is worth it in my opinion. FYI it appears that this movie has been secured for a remake here in the states. Please stop this don't support these remakes. Enjoy the OG movies in subtitles because dubbed movies just plain suck.
