Mohan Looking to Repeat last year's Giant-Killing Performance in Florida
May 30, 2012 (Signal Hill, Calif.) - After a strong start to his 2012 Formula Drift Pro Championship season, in which he has advanced to the top-16 in the first two rounds at Long Beach and Road Atlanta, Kyle Mohan is looking to keep the momentum going with this weekend's event at Palm Beach International Raceway.
As was the case at Road Atlanta, the Formula Drift drivers will face a new layout at PBIR this weekend. The second-year Formula Drift venue featured a short, fast course in 2011 but will be changed dramatically for this year's event. Mohan, who sits tenth in the Formula Drift championship, is enthused about the start to his season as well as competing in Florida again.
"We have had a pretty good start to the year, and a lot of that is down to our Nexen N6000 tires," said Mohan. "The three of us - Ryan Kado, Odi Bakchis, and myself - are in the top ten in the championship, so that tells you something about how they are working. The guys back at the shop have also done a great job with the car, we've been nailing the setup and with some updates that the car got between Long Beach and Road Atlanta, it has really helped a lot. The event at PBIR was really great last year, and there are a lot Mazda rotary fans in Florida, so we want to put on a good show."
Last year, in his purple Nexen / Mazdatrix Mazda RX-8, Mohan advanced to the top-16 after he was hit and spun out by eventual series champion Daijiro Yoshihara in the top-32 round during his lead run. After a trouble-free follow run, Mohan was through to the top-16.
"Last year, we were able to capitalize on a mistake that Dai Yoshihara made against us in the first round," said Mohan. "No one was more surprised than I was that Dai made contact with us, because on that pass we recorded our fastest entry speed of the weekend. We want to keep putting in good qualifying results and get past the top-16, and I think we have the car to do it."
Qualifying from Palm Beach International Raceway begins at 4:00 PM ET on Friday, June 1 with the top-32 competition starting on Saturday, June 2 at 4:00 PM ET. Qualifying and the competition can be seen live online on Formula Drift's Driftstream at formulad.com/live.
